On cold winter nights a gas fire can be a godsend. Especially on particularly cold nights when your central heating system is struggling to keep you and your home warm, there’s nothing better than sitting down in front of a cosy gas fire. You may assume that since you’re only using it during the winter it doesn’t need servicing every year. You’d be wrong however, as an underserviced gas fire can literally be deadly, even more so than an underserviced boiler.

Why should I have my gas fire serviced annually?

Here are 5 reasons why it’s important:

• To check the condition of the flue. A blocked flue can be incredibly dangerous. Gas fires take in air from the surrounding area which is then expelled through the flue. in the event of a blocked flue, harmful, toxic fumes cannot escape through the flue and are returned into the room.
• To evaluate the condition of the pipework and check for gas leaks.
• To inspect the ignition. When there’s a build-up of soot it can prevent the fire from igniting. The ignition will be cleaned as part of an annual service and checked to ensure it’s at peak efficiency.
• Gas fires need to be operating at the correct gas pressure in order to burn efficiently. During a service, the gas pressure will be tested to ensure that you’re not burning more gas than you need.
• To check for wear and tear and replace any parts that may be required, bringing your gas fire back up to peak performance and potentially saving you money.

What do you need to do to keep safe?

• Ensure your gas appliances are serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
• Have carbon monoxide alarms installed on each floor and get tested them regularly.
