A Guide to Magnetic System Filters
What is a magnetic system filter?
A magnetic system filters is a small device which can be installed as part of your central heating system to extract metallic sludge which naturally builds up in the system. Rust particles mix with dirt and eventually build up to create something known as ‘sludge’. A magnetic system filter will extract the rust particles before they can mix with the dirt, preventing the creation and build-up of sludge which will help keep your system running at full capacity.
What’s does sludge do to a central heating system?
Sludge can cause several serious issues over time. As the level of sludge increases, your central heating system is unable to work at the same efficiency, costing you money. Sludge also builds up in radiators and can cause cold spots, which even bleeding can’t fix.
Sludge build-up can also cause serious damage to your boiler, damaging internal water carrying parts such as the pump. This can eventually lead to breakdowns and parts needing replaced. In the worst cases, this sludge can solidify, meaning you’ll need to have all of your pipework replaced, an expensive and invasive task..
Can I remove sludge with a magnetic filter?
No. A magnetic filter can’t do much once sludge has already formed. This is why it’s important to have a filter added when a new boiler or central heating is installed. In the event you already have sludge build-up, power flushing is your best bet at dealing with it relatively cheaply. Essentially, power flushing is when your central heating system is flushed through using a specialised machine and then refilled with clean water.
Is fitting a magnetic filter something I could do myself?
It’s always a good idea to have this kind of work carried out by a qualified professional.
So sludge won’t build-up at all if I have a magnetic filter?
Unfortunately, rust and dirt accumulate in every central heating system. If you have a magnetic filter fitted, the only part of the system that should need cleaned is the filter itself. This will be done at your annual service.
Is the cost of a magnetic filter worth it?
If you’re already spending a fair amount of money on a brand new boiler you probably don’t want to hear that you need another expense. That said, you could end up saving a fortune in power flushing and potentially re-piping.
- The heating system should function efficiently for years, saving a fortune in the long run.
- Many manufacturers offer a longer guarantee if you have one fitted
- No cold spots on your radiators
- No need for power flushing
- Reduced chance of a boiler breakdown
