Found Cold Spots in Your Radiators? Consider Power Flushing
Central heating systems should be serviced annually for a plethora of reasons, including the one you want to hear, saving money. An inefficient central heating system will have to work harder to maintain the desired temperature and could end up costing a fortune in the long run.
Signs you have a problem with your heating system
If you begin to notice that your radiators aren’t quite as hot as they should be, or if you’re noticing cold spots, especially at the top of the radiator, you could well have a problem. Try bleeding the radiators to see if that fixes the issue. If not, it’s possible your central heating system needs power requires power flushing, especially if the water looks dirty. You could have a build-up of ‘sludge’, making your system work harder in order to keep your home warm and increasing your energy bills. Sludge can block the pipes, making it much more difficult for the water to travel around the system. If you’re noticing these tell-tale signs, you should have your central heating system inspected and cleaned by one of our expert Gas & Heating Engineers.
What causes sludge build-up?
Magnetite, also known as sludge, is a black substance made-up of rust particles that build-up overt time, mixed with other dirt that can block the pipes of your central heating system. Sludge is created when the water and air react with the metal of your pipes. If left untreated, it can be disastrous. In the worst cases, your entire central heating system may need replaced.
What sludge does to your central heating system
If left to run amok, sludge will clog your central heating system. It can damage the main heat exchanger, as well as the pump and valves and can damage both pipework and radiators. If your entire central heating system needs replaced, it can end up costing you several thousand pounds. If caught early, like in an annual service, you’ll likely just need your system power flushed, costing much much less than a brand new heating system.
What is Power Flushing?
Power flushing (or power cleansing) is a process used to remove the sludge from the central heating system, allowing it to operate at peak efficiency again, saving you money on your energy bills. Our expert Gas & Heating engineers use specialised machines and magnets to flush water throughout the pipework of the central heating system which pushes out the sludge.
Once the system has been flushed, we’ll install a magnetic filter which will prevent sludge build-up in the future. We’ll clean the filter every year at your annual service, meaning you won’t need to do anything.
It’s important to prevent sludge build-up, rather than deal with it after the fact so it’s a good idea to have your boiler serviced annually in order for us to find any issues as they arise, saving you a fortune in the long run.
